Tachwire reads the most from a BMW: it was built and driven on them. Other makes are being added one by one, and we only call a reading working once we’ve seen it arrive in a real drive. Most other cars from 2008 on (CAN) get the standard readings.

Every reading, by system: AFR, knock, oil, gearbox, hybrid, filter ↓

Model, body code, engine or year. We never ask for a VIN.

Or pick step by step

All models by make

Confirmed

Driven with Tachwire. Every reading under “Shows” was seen in a real drive log.

No drives yet

The app recognises the car and asks it for more than the standard set. Until a drive log shows a reading arriving, we don’t call it working.

Standard OBD

The readings most cars from 2008 on (CAN) can give. What arrives depends on the car.

“Power and torque” under Shows is the engine unit’s own torque, and power as that torque × revs, read while driving — not a dyno figure; a tuned engine reads above the brochure.

How we check a car

Only by a real drive log: a drive over Bluetooth, on the move, of a car whose VIN names that model — never the simulator or the demo.

A reading counts once it has arrived in such a drive with plausible values. Until then the page says “asked for”, not “working”.

A make’s or a model’s profile stays a trial until its first drive log. New cars are proven by the logs drivers choose to send from the app.

Audi

Confirmed Audi is recognised from the VIN. The A3 (8Y and 8V) and the Q2 get a trial profile for the dual-clutch gearbox and the engine’s own readings; on the A3 (8Y) drives have already shown it working. The Q3, TT, A4, A5, Q5, A6 and A7 get a trial profile that reads the engine, gearbox, tyre pressures, 12 V battery and service interval from the car’s own units once each unit names its family. The RS 3 gets the standard readings.

No drives yet Volkswagen is recognised from the VIN. The Tiguan 2 and the T-Roc get a trial profile for the dual-clutch gearbox and the engine’s own readings; the Golf 7 and 8 get the gearbox’s once it answers as a dual-clutch one, and the Golf 8 the engine’s too. The Tiguan 3, Passat, Arteon, Tayron, Polo, T-Cross, Touran, Caddy, Multivan and the other models with CarPlay get a trial profile that reads the engine, gearbox, tyre pressures, 12 V battery and service interval from the car’s own units once each unit names its family. The Amarok from 2023 is read as a Ford Ranger.

Readings

Every reading, by system

What Tachwire reads and where it comes from. Each mark names the cars it is asked of: confirmed where a drive log has shown it arriving, “no drives yet” where the app asks and no drive has shown it yet. What a car gives through standard OBD depends on the car.

Engine

  • Revs

From the engine unit, as often as the adapter allows.

Most cars from 2008 on (CAN)
  • Coolant temperature

Counted down to READY while the engine warms up; a voice if it runs critically hot.

  • Power and torque

The engine unit’s own torque figure, and power as that torque × revs. Read from the car, not measured on a dyno: a tuned engine shows more than the brochure.

  • Engine load

How hard the engine is working, as the engine unit works it out.

Most cars from 2008 on (CAN)
  • Throttle and pedal

Where your foot is, and how far the throttle has opened.

Most cars from 2008 on (CAN)
  • Catalyst temperature

As the engine unit reports it; on many cars that is its own estimate, not a sensor.

Most cars from 2008 on (CAN)

Boost and air

  • Boost

Pressure in the intake above the outside air, from the engine’s own sensor.

  • Intercooler efficiency

On every pull, how much of the compressor’s heat the intercooler takes out — from the engine’s sensors before the compressor and after the intercooler.

BMW G petrol · plug-in hybridToyota GR Supra
  • Intake and charge-air temperature

The air on its way into the engine.

Most cars from 2008 on (CAN)
  • Outside air pressure and temperature

Boost is measured against the outside air pressure.

Most cars from 2008 on (CAN)

Mixture and ignition

  • AFR and λ

λ is what the wideband oxygen sensor before the catalyst measures: 1.0 is the ideal mixture, lower is rich, higher is lean. The AFR is λ × the fuel’s ratio, 14.7 : 1 for petrol, worked out on the phone. On the overrun the sensor tops out, so the tile reads “≥ 29.4” rather than a made-up number. On a tile, on the drive’s chart and under every run.

Not on BMW and MINI diesels: their engine units don’t report λ. A blend such as E85 is still shown against 14.7.

  • Target λ

The mixture the engine unit is aiming for, beside the one measured.

Most cars from 2008 on (CAN)
  • Timing pull (knock retard)

How far the engine pulls ignition back under load to stop knock, and each cylinder against the rest.

BMW G petrol · plug-in hybridToyota GR Supra
  • Ignition advance

The spark timing the engine unit sets. Its dips at gear changes are not knock.

Most cars from 2008 on (CAN)
  • Fuel trims

How much the engine unit corrects the fuel, short- and long-term.

Movement

  • Speed

The car’s own speed, corrected on every drive against satellite speed from GPS, or from a Dragy in the TestFlight builds.

Most cars from 2008 on (CAN)
  • Route and GPS speed

From the phone’s location. A drive log you send has the route removed.

    iPhone
  • g-forces

Braking, acceleration and cornering from the phone’s motion sensors; the app learns which way is forward from the car’s speed.

    iPhone
  • Dragy

In the TestFlight builds: a Dragy DRG70 gives satellite speed for runs when it has a good fix.

    Dragy

Laps and runs

  • Lap times

At a track’s start/finish line, from the app’s list of tracks or a line you set.

    iPhone
  • Runs

0–100 and 100–200 km/h, ¼ to 1 mile; the AFR through each run where the car reports λ.

    iPhoneDragy

Power and torque are the engine unit’s own figures, read from the car while you drive — not a dyno measurement, and a tuned engine reads above the brochure. Power the app can’t yet stand behind is dimmed in the app and kept out of records.

Bluetooth LE

You’ll need a Bluetooth LE adapter

An iPhone talks only to Bluetooth LE adapters, not to classic Bluetooth or Wi-Fi ones. Driven on: OBDLink CX (the fastest), vLinker MC+ / FS, vLinker BM+, vLinker FD+, UniCarScan UCSI-2100, Veepeak BLE, Vgate iCar Pro BLE 4.0, OBDII Snowman, Rokodil ScanX.

All adapters we know of

Drive one of the cars with no drives yet?

Install Tachwire from the App Store, drive as usual and send the drive from More → Help the project. A drive usually shows us which readings arrive; this page changes once they do.

Where you drove isn’t sent: location is removed on the phone; only laps on a track keep their positions.

What will not work

BMW E-series and older: nothing from the car’s own units. At most the standard readings, and only where the OBD port speaks CAN, as on most E-series built from 2007.

MINI built before 2014, and the MINI generation from 2024.

Classic Bluetooth and Wi-Fi adapters, as above.

Cars without an OBD port, or whose port does not speak CAN: the app talks CAN only, and many cars built before 2008 do not.

Your car is here but something is missing? Send a drive from More → Help the project and write to support@tachwire.app with its code. That is how a reading gets confirmed.
