Adapters

Which adapter to get

Bluetooth LE only: an iPhone will not talk to a classic Bluetooth or Wi-Fi adapter, whatever the adapter can otherwise do.

Driven on

9
  • OBDLink CX

    Driven on≈ $80 · €100–106
    Fast19/s

The fastest: the BMW units’ own readings come about twice as often as through any other adapter. On firmware older than 5.13.1 it was slower and reset itself; update it with the OBDLink app.

  • vLinker MC+ / FS

    Driven on≈ $67–70 · €63–68
    Fast16/s

Revs and speed as often as on the CX or more; the BMW units’ own readings about half as often.

  • vLinker BM+

    Driven on≈ $48–68 · €54–55
    Fast17/s

Revs and speed as often as on the CX or more; the BMW units’ own readings about half as often.

  • vLinker FD+

    Driven on≈ $47–51 · €55
    Fast16/s

Revs and speed as often as on the CX or more; the BMW units’ own readings about half as often.

  • UniCarScan UCSI-2100

    Driven on≈ $70 · €49–59
    Medium13/s

Every reading the car gives arrives; tiles refresh a little less often than on the fast ones.

  • Veepeak BLE

    Driven on≈ $32–35
    Medium12/s

A plain ELM327: every reading arrives, tiles refresh less often than on the fast ones. Now and then the data paused for 10–20 seconds, and the first figures took a few seconds longer to come.

  • Vgate iCar Pro BLE 4.0

    Driven on≈ $34–39 · €37
    Medium12/s

The Bluetooth LE one of the three iCar Pro models, and the only one an iPhone can talk to. It cuts long answers short now and then, and the data then pauses for 10–30 seconds, two or three times an hour.

  • OBDII Snowman

    Driven on—
    Slow10/s

A plain ELM327 clone: every reading arrived whole, long ones included, and the link held steady over 16 drives; tiles refresh less often than on the medium ones.

  • Rokodil ScanX

    Driven on—
    Slow8/s

The slowest we measured: every reading arrives, tiles refresh about half as often as on the fast ones. About once an hour it fell silent and the app reconnected.

Not fully checked

2
  • ELM327 clones with BLE

    Driven on (one clone)≈ €10–21
    Medium11/s

Driven on one clone, “OBD BLE”, in 58 drives on one car: every reading arrived, a little less often than on the medium ones. Most clones work, and quality varies from one to the next; a long reading may be cut short, and the tile says so.

  • OBDLink MX+

    Not checked yet≈ $140 · €139
    Too few drives

The same chip as the CX. We have not checked what it offers over Bluetooth LE.

Speed is how many requests the car answered each second through the adapter while driving: the median of our testers’ drives on BMW G- and F-series cars, app builds from October 2026. Fast is 15 or more, medium 11 to 15, slow under 11. Every adapter that connects brings every reading; a slower one refreshes the tiles less often.

Prices are approximate: what shops in the US and the EU asked in October 2026, rounded. They vary from shop to shop and over time; a dash means we found no price. We sell nothing and get nothing from a sale.
